The search is on for a driver who hit a 12-year-old boy while he was riding his bike.

It happened on Monday near Grand Canyon and U.S. 95.

Neighbors who saw it happen spoke to Action News on Tuesday.

They say the bicyclist was riding through a crosswalk when he was struck.

"It just breaks my heart, you know, because I think of my son,” Wendee Edwards told Action News.
She says she can’t get the scene out of her head.

"His glasses got thrown,” she recounted. “His phone got thrown. His books got thrown. All of his books and everything like that."

Police say it happened around 3:45 p.m. Edwards almost hit the boy first.  She says she was driving at normal speed when he suddenly shot onto the crosswalk.

"I stopped in the middle of the intersection,” she said. “The car that was on the north of me did not. She continued and she hit him. The lady got out of the car screaming at him.

So the boy begged for forgiveness.

"He was apologizing to the lady. I'm so sorry, I'm sorry," Edwards recounts.

The boy's remorse wasn't enough to keep the driver on the scene until the cops came. According to Edwards, she left as soon as witnesses began calling authorities.

"As soon as we turned around, she was in her car and she sped off as fast as she could," Edwards says.
The boy was sent to Centennial Hills Hospital with minor injuries.
