LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A Las Vegas police officer was driving the wrong way on Paradise Road when he was arrested on a DUI charge last week.

Garrett Spitzmesser, 25, was taken into custody on Jan. 27 on Paradise Road near Harmon Avenue. He was pulled over by the overnight watch commander, Lt. David Gordon, around 5 a.m.

Gordon wrote that he first spotted a sedan traveling north in the southbound lanes of Paradise Road in the arrest report. Gordon noted that he could smell an alcoholic beverage on Spitzmesser’s breath once he pulled the 25-year-old over and that Spitzmesser’s eyes were glossy.

Spitzmesser declined a field sobriety test after asking Gordon if his body camera was on. He also did not consent to a blood draw and asked for a lawyer, according to the arrest report.

Spitzmesser is facing one charge of driving the wrong way on a one-way road and one count of DUI. He was released from the detention center on his own recognizance and is due back in court on March 29.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department did not provide any further immediate information about the officer or say if he is facing discipline by the department.

Spitzmesser has been with LVMPD since 2017.
