PHOENIX (KTNV) — A few parents in Phoenix are outraged over controversial Ku Klux Klan costumes used in a high school play.

Students at ASU Preparatory Academy Phoenix campus wore the KKK outfits for a performance of a play called ‘The Foreigner.’

Parents and students in the audience said they weren't told ahead of time about the costumes.

The Klansmen are part of the scripted play but one parent also said the characters could have been portrayed without 'full regalia.'

The school released the following statement:

We apologize if anyone was caught by surprise with the appearance of these characters. We are confident that a fair reading of the text of the play, and a fair interpretation of the intentions of students who performed it, reveals no endorsement of bigotry.
