A cat helped alert a couple to a fire in Summerlin early Sunday morning.

The fire happened on Abbotsbury Drive near Desert Inn Road and Town Center Drive around 2 a.m.

A cat woke up a husband and wife who were sleeping by scratching at the cabinets in the kitchen. When the husband went to check on things, he opened the door to the garage to find the fire. The wife then called 911.

Their nephew, who was visiting, was sleeping on the couch and ran out to safety.

Neighbors said they thought they heard gunfire but it was actually the vehicle tires exploding. Two vehicles were completely destroyed by the fire.

Most of the damage was confined to the garage. There was very little smoke inside in the home and no other damage.

There were no injuries reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
