Jan. 23 is National Reading Day and 13 Action News and the Scripps Howard Foundation are helping more kids in the Las Vegas valley read.

In addition, The Venetian and Palazzo Las Vegas are giving a $25K grant to the state's largest children's literacy nonprofit organization.

13 Action News was invited to a special ceremony to celebrate the donation and the special day at Helen Herr Elementary.

But before the special ceremony, 13 Action News General Manager Chris Way dropped off 2,000 books to Spread the Word Nevada on Monday. The books were collected by Channel 13 and the Scripps Howard Foundation as part of the "If You Give A Child A Book" campaign. 

Spread the Word Nevada donates 52,000 books a month to 51 schools in need around the valley. leaders say that the books not only help the children, but they really have an impact on the whole family. 

The nonprofit says they are only about halfwauy to their overall goal, they want to help close to 100 schools in the Las Vegas valley.
