LAS VEGAS (AP) — Southern Nevada is recruiting volunteers to estimate how many people are without homes or living in shelters.
Michael Pawlak is the director of Clark County's Social Service Department. He says the annual count around the Las Vegas valley helps officials apply for grants for housing, job training and other services to help the homeless.
The count is scheduled for Jan. 22 and Jan. 23. Volunteers can register online.
The county says it is in need of people who have smart phones and can drive others to conduct the census.
The 2017 count identified nearly 6,100 people who were living in shelters or on the streets. Officials say they were able to secure more than $13 million in grants for local programs that help the homeless.
