ORIGINAL STORY

BOULDER CITY, Nev. (KTNV) -- A 48-year-old man from Florida is dead after scuba diving within Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

At 1:36 p.m. Saturday, the Lake Mead National Recreation Area Interagency Communication Center received a call on marine band radio, reporting that a diver who was diving surfaced from the dive unconscious.

Personnel from the National Park Service, Nevada Department of Wildlife, Mercy Air and the Clark County Fire Department responded and performed patient care. The victim could not be revived and was pronounced dead at 2:40 p.m.

Tampa police Lt. Kimberly Plourde-Torres confirmed to the Associated Press Sunday that Fred Thomas Arnold III was a 27-year veteran of the department.

She says his death has hit fellow officers very hard.

She describes Arnold to the AP as someone who was "always smiling, always giving you hugs."

The incident is under investigation.
