A man called 911 saying that he accidentally shot a woman in the stomach around 2:27 p.m. Sunday.

The incident happened at 4155 West Twain Avenue, near Wynn Road.

Police say the man shot the woman, then called his mom to tell her what he did. After that, they both called 911.

As officers were responding to the scene and heading up the stairs to the apartment, they heard another gunshot. Police believe that was the shot that took the man's life. When police knocked on the door, a 9-year-old boy answered.

Child Protective Services soon arrived on the scene of the shooting, along with the boy's grandmother.

13 Action News spoke with a couple girls who knew the deceased woman well.

“She was just like another mom, a second mom, always there, fed us whenever we went there, bought us stuff, treated us like her own daughters.”

Correction: Initial reports indicated that the boy was 8 years old, but now police are saying he is 9 years old. Additionally, though the man claimed he shot his wife in the 911 call, his actual relationship to the woman is not entirely clear.
