UPDATE: Man killed in Mohave County gun battle later determined to not be suspect

UPDATE JULY 19: The man killed was identified as 54-year-old Silas Andrew Smith Jr. of Bellflower, California. Police later determined he was not the suspect wanted in connection with the search warrant.

The Mohave County Sheriff's detective involved was also identified. Detective Aaron Devries, 30, was placed on routine paid administrative leave. He has been with the MCSO for nine years.

Per Drug Enforcement Agency policy, the name of the DEA agent who was also involved in the officer-involved shooting will not be released at this time.

Bullhead City Police are continuing to investigate.

ORIGINAL STORY

GOLDEN VALLEY, Ariz. (KTNV) -- A man was killed after being shot by Mohave County Sheriff's detectives Tuesday afternoon in Golden Valley, Arizona.

Narcotics detectives with the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office attempted to contact a man in the 5000 block of Highway 68 in Golden Valley around 1:10 p.m. 

The man was wanted for questioning in connection with a drug search warrant conducted earlier that day.  The man fled in a vehicle while the detectives pursued. The subject stopped the vehicle in a field and then fled on foot. 

The detectives observed the subject walking west on Earl Road at Mobile Road with a handgun. As detectives approached, the man ran a short distance before stopping and allegedly fired at the detectives. 

A gun battle ensued and the man was fatally shot. Neither detective was injured.

The Bullhead City Police Department is conducting the formal investigation.
