LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — The holidays can be a busy and expensive time for homeowners. This time of year, many people are caught off-guard with how expensive their water bill can be.

13 Action News spoke with one plumber who says many of his customers can see their water bill go up during the winter and the holidays. The rise can be because of guests staying at home, more people taking showers, and even more cooking.

Also, the most significant factor in rising water bills is weather changes affecting pipes that can turn into leaks - even a slow leak that goes unnoticed can cost extra money.

"When the leaks start happening, that's when your water bill is going to go up, and the winter is a huge time for that," said Kyle Lessard, the owner of Eternal Plumbing Solutions.

Additionally, Lessard shared ways consumers you save money on water bills this winter:

  • Toilets are already responsible for over 25% of your bill, and with guests over for the holidays, even more people will be using them. Check your fixtures and your flappers for leaks.
  • Running a full dishwasher actually uses less water than doing the dishes by hand.
  • Take any opportunity you have to turn off the tap, including while washing your hands and brushing your teeth.
