LAS VEGAS/KTNV — Nothing brings a family together quite like a few laps around the ice rink.

"Well, I'm not skating with the kids. They want their father healthy for Christmas," joked one local dad, who watched his kids skate from the sidelines.

Skating at the Rock Rink in Downtown Summerlin has quickly become a Christmas Eve tradition for many families.

"She's always said, I want to go ice skating, I want to go ice skating, so we figured, hey, why not? Let's start making this a tradition," said one local mom.

Her daughter Chancis said her favorite part of skating is when she wipes out - a sentiment not shared by her dad.

"I almost had to go to the hospital twice, but I'm getting better. It's like a newborn baby out there. I'm looking like Bambi right here with the knees knocking and everything but I'm trying. I'm having fun," said Chancis' dad.

It's no surprise why the skating has become so popular on Christmas Eve - it's active, fun and festive.

"Everyone's smiling; there's like Christmas goofy sweaters. It does bring a smile to my face," said Tyler Benson, the manager of the rink.

The rink is closed Christmas Day but reopens Wednesday at 10 a.m. and will remain open through Jan 21.
