It feels like we hear about data breaches all the time and this is having an unfortunate side effect on consumers.
"Until enough Americans step up and go hey I'm tired of this happening. I'm tired of my information being out there, nothing is going to change," said Arthur Salmon, the cybersecurity program director for the College of Southern Nevada.
Salmon says we're fed up of hearing about our information being stolen, but we're not actually doing anything. Salmon says this is why it keeps happening. Big companies aren't being held accountable.
"They literally just will tell you that they don't care 'cause they don't understand it. So it's easier to bury their head in the sand and ignore it," said Salmon.
If you're a victim, Salmon says you should file a police report and put a hold on your bank accounts. Getting justice, though, is slow and expensive. It's quicker to just make your passwords hard to crack rather than just using one for everything.
A Rand Corporation report shows only 4 percent started using a password manager after they were told their stuff was leaked in a data breach.
