LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — As the 2019 tax filing season gets closer, the IRS is sending out a warning that phishing scams are on the rise.

Emails may have a subject line with "IRS important notice" and demand money or threaten to seize a tax refund. This is an easy way for a scammer to get financial information to steal a refund.

Taxpayers saw a 60 percent increase this year in bogus emails trying to scam them out of money or tax information.

Here's is a few steps to help protect finances:

  • Keep an eye out for grammar errors or misspelling. Sometimes, the scammer may be spoofing an email address with a slight change in text.
  • Remember that the IRS will never call or email to demand immediate payment. They should always send you a bill first.
  • Never open a hyperlink or attachment from a suspicious source
