Two dozen new cases of the rare, polio-like illness named Acute Flaccid Myelitis have been reported across the U.S.

The illness typically strikes children. 16 states have reported new cases of AFM this year.

The CDC reported 120 cases in 34 states in 2014, 22 cases in 17 states in 2015, 149 cases in 38 states and Washington, D.C., in 2016 and 33 cases in 16 states in 2017, according to PEOPLE magazine.

It usually starts with a common cold. Symptoms include facial droop/weakness, difficulty moving eyes and drooping eyelids, difficulty swallowing, and slurred speech.
