Follow-up statement from SpectraRep president Patrick DeConcini
A statement from SpectraRep president Patrick DeConcini:
Clark County School District Police Department (CCSD PD) and VegasPBS are to be congratulated for developing a state-of-the-art incident response tool that provides capabilities beyond those in place at most police organizations in the country, even those with far more resources.
The recognition received from the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) is well deserved because it awards innovation which will save lives and reduce risk. The 9/11 Commission Report identified communication failures at the scene of an incident as one of the most pernicious and persistent weaknesses for public safety response, especially during major incidents when bandwidth is limited. This system directly addresses those issues and puts CCSD Police at the forefront of technology innovation. If a Columbine or Virginia Tech situation develops at one of the Clark County schools, with this system in place CCSD PD will have a reliable way to deliver bandwidth intensive content, such as video and other large files directly to first responders at the scene of the incident.
Because it leverages existing, local PBS infrastructure and relies on creative partnerships it is extremely cost effective and represents the best of breed in technology and collaborative leadership. Bringing people together in pursuit of a common goal is never easy; however, CCSD PD and Vegas PBS proved that by diligently working together to serve the public new ground could be broken in Las Vegas with minimal cost to the local community.
This project was funded by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, not the Clark County School District. The project is an example of exemplary leadership delivering life saving technology to first responders in a cost effective and prudent manner. Taxpayers, especially in Clark County, can be proud of how this money was spent and can sleep a little better knowing that if and when needed, CCSD PD will have the best communication capabilities available. Without superb local leadership these funds would have gone to a similar project in another jurisdiction. Not only did this system create a template for this technology to be used around the country, it will someday be responsible for saving the life of a CCSD student and we are proud to have played a part in building it.
