Frozen custard is believed to have originated on Coney Island in New York state in 1919. A frozen custard stand at the 1933 World's Fair in Chicago introduced it to a much bigger audience. The churning process used to make frozen custard minimizes ice crystals and excess air and results in a smoother texture than ice cream. Also, custard is richer than ice cream as the result of the addition of eggs to the mixture.

National Frozen Custard Day is Aug. 8 and the following is a list of some of the best frozen custard in the Las Vegas valley:

Luv-It Frozen Custard
Luv-It Frozen Custard on Oakey Boulevard is a Las Vegas institution. The family-owned business opened in 1973. There are only 4 flavors of custard available each day -- chocolate, vanilla and 2 daily specials.

Nielsen's Frozen Custard
The frozen custard at Nielsen's is served at approximately 26 degrees which allows your taste buds to get a true taste and not numbed because the custard is too cold. Flavors include vanilla, chocolate and flavor of the day.

Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers
The frozen custard at Freddy's is churned fresh throughout the day.They use it to make a variety of sundaes, including their signature turtle sundae and Hawaiian Delight sundae. They also offer Oreo custard sandwiches.

Shake Shack
Shake Shack uses "spun-fresh" frozen custard in its concretes. They only use real sugar, no corn syrup, and milk from dairy farmers who pledge not to use artificial growth hormones. Also, Shake Shack's fudge sauce and caramel sauce have zero shelf-life lengtheners.

Rita's Italian Ice
Rita's doesn't just serve Italian ice, they also have frozen custard. Their old-fashioned frozen custard is sure to make your mouth happy. They offer sprinkles, hot fudge and caramel toppings. Rita's sundaes are also made with the rich, premium custard.

CJ's Italian Ice & Custard
If you are looking for something besides chocolate or vanilla, CJ's is the place to go. They offer multiple flavors of custard including mango, marshmallow, peanut butter, peppermint, papaya, pumpkin, rum, teaberry, tutti fruitti and white chocolate. They also make custard cakes and custard cannolis.
