South Carolina residents say that masked clowns are trying to lure their children into the woods, according to The Huffington Post.

The sightings in Greenville, South Carolina allegedly began on Aug. 19 near Fleetwood Manor Apartments. Reports say the clowns "whisper and make strange noises," using large amounts of money to draw their targets into the woods.

One woman spotted a clown with a blinking nose standing under a light post around 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 20. The clown waved to the woman, so she waved back. She crossed the street without being hurt, though felt shaken by the incident.

Other residents called police after spotting more clowns at a basketball court near the apartment complex, according to WNCN. One family reported hearing "chains and banging" on their front door.

The property manager of the apartment complex sent out a letter to warn residents about the clown sightings. The letter reminded parents to supervise their children at night.
