NFL Star Cam Newton Loses Sponsorship Over Sexist Comments

Former NFL Most Valuable Player Cam Newton lost a key endorsement Thursday, a day after making a sexist remark at a press conference.

A female beat reporter asked Newton a question Wednesday about the route-running of one of his receivers. Newton laughed and said it was "funny to hear a female talk about routes."

The reporter, Jourdan Rodrigue, said she sought Newton out after the press conference was over, but Newton didn't apologize to her.

The comments cost him a deal with Dannon yogurt, which has featured him in TV ads since 2015.

In a statement, Dannon said, "It's simply not OK to belittle anyone based on gender."

It appears Newton will still be paid for the rest of his contract with Dannon, which Forbes says is worth about $1 million per year.

Gatorade, another product Newton endorses, released a statement condemning Newton's comments, but didn't say it was dropping its deal with him.

Newton has a long list of other endorsements, including Beats headphones and Under Armour. So far those companies have not addressed Newton's comments.

An NFL spokesman called Newton's comments "just plain wrong and disrespectful" to the league's female reporters. Newton has since released a statement apologizing for his comments.
