New York (KTNV) -- A press event that Facebook is holding this week, could launch a new feature for Instagram.

According to Tech Crunch, a source said Facebook will unveil that Instagram, its popular photo-sharing app, will begin letting people take and share short videos.

The announcement is expected on Thursday.

Since the new feature has been kept under wraps, there isn't any information available on when it would be launched, or whether there would be filters or if this would be in a separate app or part of an Instagram update.

However, it's being reported the videos would be between five and ten seconds in length.

This appears to be a response to the increasing popularity of other video-sharing services, specifically Twitter's Vine.

Vine allows users to take six seconds of video on an iOS or Android product and then share their clips to Vine's network, either on Twitter or Facebook.
