Hayward, CA (KTNV) -- An elementary school in California hosted an event this weekend, to get guns out of the hands of kids. But it's not the kind of guns you're probably thinking about.

Toy guns filled bins as kids surrendered their plastic arms, in exchange for books and a chance to win a new bike.

The school's principal decided to host the exchange because he believes playing with toy guns desensitizes kids, and increases the chances they'll use the real thing when they grow up.

Police officers were also invited to teach kids about gun safety.
