United Way keeps kids in school

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- United Way has a lot of programs but one of the least known is keeping kids in Southern Nevada in school.  And it's making Las Vegas a better place to live.

The program is called FERC -- Family Engagement Resource Center.  Students close to dropping out are invited to the FERC center to get advice, get help with homework, and help navigating high school.

United Way President & CEO Cass Palmer says, "This opportunity allows them to achieve that one thing they need and that's that high school diploma. I ran employment centers here for many years. Without that High School diploma they don't have a shot at getting a decent job."

The United Way funds this FERC program in five Clark County Schools and so far, they are helping 2500 students stay in school.

United Way is one of five non profits in Southern Nevada participating in this Saturday's Day of Sharing.  
 
Just swing by any Albertsons/Save-on store and drop off gently used clothes, household items, non-perishable food items, and new hygiene items.  The organizations will share your donations among themselves.  The five groups said it made sense to team up for this event because  they often serve the same people.
