Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Families will be hitting Lake Las Vegas to watch dragon boat racing this weekend.  Every boat racing is helping local women fight breast cancer.  It's Making Las Vegas a better place to live.

Vicki Phillips finished up her breast cancer treatments two months ago.  So she got a group of women from her church to raise the money to race in this year's event.

Vicki says, "When I presented it to my very good friends who were praying for me because I had cancer, the team just came together."

Proceeds from the races go to the Rose Project at St. Rose Hospital.  The Rose project provides care to uninsured women with breast cancer.

Holly Lyman is the Director of Womenscare Centers.  She says, "If you don't have access to care, you are not getting clinical screenings or mammograms. You could have cancer and it could be undetected. The sooner you catch breast cancer, the better the outcomes."

There are a few boats to watch for at the races.  First, there will be some professional racers competing.  But also, there will be two boats made up entirely of breast cancer survivors.  They've lost a few friends this past year.  They will be racing in their honor and all of us at Action News will be pulling for them.
