MAKING LAS VEGAS A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE
Las Vegas Shakespeare Company plans expansion
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- October in Henderson means Shakespeare in the park. The Las Vegas Shakespeare Company is performing Hamlet this year. The park venue is a crowd favorite but soon the company's permanent downtown Las Vegas home will be getting a makeover.
Dan Decker, the company's artistic director says, "We're talking about taking a blighted area of the city and bringing life back. Since the 1950's cities have understood that arts lead the way to revitalization. Arts define the soul of the city."
The remodeled Reed Whipple center will feature an art gallery, Rosemary's restaurant, and a 499 seat theatre. The company hopes for a 2014 completion. That's when they will ramp up for a full season of theatre -- 8 or 9 shows including musicals and children's theatre. Decker says, "We're very excited about the Smith center. They're doing a great job. They are a touring company. A road house. They don't produce plays. We on the other hand are a resident production company that only produces plays. Every great city has both. They have the arts center and their resident professional company. So that is our niche here."
