A woman said a mailbox thief tried to use a stolen check to gain access to her bank account information.

People living in the Riverwalk subdivision near Desert Inn and Hollywood found more than twenty mailboxes emptied out Friday.

"It's scary, it's scary," said Helen Libel.

The thieves used a tool to pry open the mailboxes. They got away with a check that resident Sheila Robinson had just put in the outgoing mailbox.

"I got a phone call when I was at work from the Nevada State Bank stating that someone was trying to cash a check," Robinson said.

She got police involved and found out the thief was trying to gain access to even more of her funds.

"It looked like they tried to make a homemade check from what the police department stated," she said.

Some of Robinson's neighbors had no idea what was stolen from them.

The U.S. Postal Service has a new program available that might help you get to your mail before thieves can.

"Informed Delivery" became available in most parts of the country just last week. If you're eligible, USPS will email you photos of what you can expect to find in the mail each day. If something's missing, you can alert authorities.

Robinson is also encouraging her neighbors to keep an extra eye on the mailboxes in her community.

"If they see somebody going up to the mailboxes to maybe want to check to see if they're trying to bust into them or if they're really getting their mail," she said.
