Health officials in southern Nevada have rejected three applications for level 3 trauma centers amid concerns that some applicants were driven by financial gain rather than public interest.

The Southern Nevada Health District's Board of Health decided Thursday not to accept applications from MountainView Hospital, Centennial Hills Hospital Medical Center and Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center. Level 3 trauma centers treat the least seriously injured patients of traumatic events like falls and car crashes.

The board also acknowledged, however, that more research could be a good thing. The motion left open the possibility of having an independent group study the region's trauma needs.
