Shopping cart locks meant to stop thieves confusing Las Vegas shoppers

A chain of Las Vegas valley dollar stores is trying a new way to keep people from ripping off their shopping carts.

To get a cart out of line, shoppers at 99 Cents Only now need to put a quarter into a buckle device attached to the handle. The quarter releases the cart, then when the cart is returned and the buckle reattached, the quarter pops out.

The system's about a week old, and most shoppers at the location near Charleston and Nellis boulevards were confused Tuesday.

Some walked away in frustration when discovering the carts were locked. Others thought they were being charged 25 cents to use a cart.

Managers have been spending a lot of time outside explaining the devices, and usually shoppers are understanding.

Some are enthusiastic about the idea to deter people from walking off with carts.

For now, the store is providing quarters to shoppers who don't have one.

Not having change was the most common complaint about the system.
