LAS VEGAS, NV (KTNV) -- The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department investigated a crash near Desert Inn Road and Valley View Boulevard, involving a rider on a scooter.

The call came in at 12:41 p.m. on Wednesday.

The rider was transported to the UMC Trauma Center in critical condition.

Police said Kristopher Torrez, 24, was riding a motorized scooter when it began sliding sideways and fell on its side, ejecting the operator. The operator and scooter slid northbound coming to rest in the left travel lane. According to police, Torrez was not wearing a helmet.

Police determined a large trail of oil, present in the center travel lane contributed to the scooter rider losing control.

A vehicle was located on Capella Avenue and determined to be the cause of the oil spill. Contact was made with the driver who confirmed he experienced mechanical difficulty before the incident.
