A Florida Highway Patrol trooper performing traffic duty near Miami was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries last Friday after a car struck the officer while he was performing a radar speed test on vehicles.
While the trooper is recovering from his serious injuries, a fundraiser was started on Go Fund Me to provide assistance to Trooper Carlos J. Rosario-Flore's immediate family. As of late Monday evening, the fundraiser had garnered $49,000 in donations from 634 contributors.
The goal of the fundraiser was to raise $75,000 for the family.
According to an account of the incident, while the trooper was motioning to a speeding motorist, a second vehicle lost control and struck several of the patrol cars prior to striking Trooper Rosario-Flores.
According to the Miami Herald, Trooper Rosario-Flores underwent successful surgery on Saturday on his hands.
The driver was identified as Hugo Olivares, 26, who stayed at the scene. He was said to have suffered from minor injuries.
The Miami Herald reported that Olivares has had a clean driving record since 2011, when he briefly had his license suspended for a number of traffic violations.
Trooper Rosario-Flores is a 12-year veteran of the Florida Highway Patrol.
