Manti Te'o speaks to Katie Couric about fake girlfriend in exclusive interview
(KTNV) -- Football player Manti Te'o is finally talking about what happened.
It is the first time that the Notre Dame football star has spoken on camera since the wild story about his not-so-real girlfriend broke.
Te'o sat down for an exclusive interview with Katie Couric of ABC.
Te'o had made headlines last year with the heartbreaking tale of how he lost both his grandmother and the love of his life on the same day.
Later, it came out that although his grandmother did die, the girlfriend never actually existed.
Te'o has maintained that he did not know that the woman he fell in love with online did not exist.
However, he apparently admits to Couric that even when he did begin to suspect something was not quite right, it was only two days before an appearance on national television and he may not have known what to do.
Many people believe that Te'o maintained the lie in order to gain sympathy and even votes for the Heisman trophy.
The interview with Katie Couric will air this morning on "Good Morning America."
