Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The nation's top doctors are sounding the alarm about this season's influenza virus.

Many states in the country have seen a dramatic increase in their cases of the flu, compared to last year.

Experts say this year's vaccine seems to be effective but they're wondering why this season, which usually peaks in February, is so severe right now.

One strain of the flu is primarily hitting some western states, including Nevada, while the rest of the nation is seeing the primary strain.

The cause of the big increase in flu sufferers this year might be due to the drier air, which allows the virus to spread farther than when the air is heavy and moist.
