Ill. man sentenced to 4 life terms in '07 killings
JOLIET, Ill. (AP) -- A judge has sentenced a suburban Chicago man to life in prison for killing his wife and three children because he allegedly wanted to start a new life subsisting in the Canadian wilderness.
Tuesday's sentencing of Christopher Vaughn comes two months after jurors found him guilty of murdering 34-year-old Kimberly Vaughn and their children -- 12-year-old Abigayle, 11-year-old Cassandra and 8-year-old Blake.
Prosecutors say the 37-year-old computer specialist planned the killings because he saw his family as an obstacle to his dream of a new life. He shot them in the family's SUV in June 2007 during what he said was a surprise trip to a waterpark.
The judge sentenced Vaughn to four consecutive life sentences with no chance of parole. He made no statement in court.
