Sentencing set for man in Fast and Furious case
PHOENIX (AP) -- A sentencing date has been set for an admitted member of a gun smuggling ring that was being monitored by the federal government's botched investigation known as Operation Fast and Furious.
Jose Angel Polanco is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 24.
Polanco pleaded guilty to a federal conspiracy charge in April and faces up to five years in prison.
He admitted to buying three guns for the ring and claiming that he was buying the weapons for himself when he was actually making the purchases for the ring.
So far, 11 people in the alleged 20-member smuggling ring have pleaded guilty.
Federal authorities have faced criticism for allowing suspected straw gun buyers to walk away from gun shops with weapons, rather than arrest the suspects and seize the guns there.
