Stowaways possible in container ship docked in NJ
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Authorities are searching cargo containers in New Jersey for possible stowaways after a Coast Guard inspection team heard knocking coming from a cargo ship that had arrived from the Middle East.
Dock workers rushed to unload stacked containers on Wednesday after the inspection team heard knocking for about two hours, suggesting that stowaways might be inside one of the boxes.
A spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says no stowaways have been found but officials will continue examining containers Thursday morning.
More than 150 of the 200 containers authorities believe could be carrying people have been examined so far. The ship has 2,000 containers.
