LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Jury selection is set to begin in Amarillo in the federal trial of a Saudi man accused of gathering bomb-making components at his West Texas apartment in an effort to build and use a weapon of mass destruction.

Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari, 22, a former Texas Tech University chemical engineering, faces up to life in prison if convicted.

Twice in the days leading up to Aldawsari's arrest federal agents secretly searched his West Texas apartment, where they say they found bomb-making chemicals as well as beakers, flasks, wiring, a hazmat suit and clocks.

Authorities arrested the Aldawsari Feb. 23, 2011, and charged him with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. He has pleaded not guilty, and attorneys plan to use an insanity defense, court records show.
