American kidnapped in Benin, US officials say
DAKAR, Senegal (AP) -- The U.S. Embassy in Benin says an American citizen has been kidnapped in the West African nation.
The embassy statement, posted on its website Tuesday, provided no details on the case, except to say that it does not appear to put other Americans in the country at risk.
Benin is a calm and politically stable nation on Africa's western coast. The country is known as a rare oasis of relative democracy.
However, it shares a border with the much larger nation of Nigeria, which has been destabilized by the rise of Boko Haram, a terrorist group.
