Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Your nail polish could be making you sick.

A recent investigation finds many paints with labels claiming to be free of dangerous chemicals may be wrong.

The concern is over three potentially harmful chemicals sometimes found in nail polish: Toluene, Formeldehyde and Dibutyl Phthalate, known as DBP.

A study in California found 10 of 12 products had at least one chemical on the list.

The findings even went as far as to claim that these nail polishes could affect unborn babies by causing birth defects.

"They cause reproductive toxicity," Karl Palmer with the California Dept. of Toxic Substance Control said. "They cause harm to women who might be pregnant, and over the long term and with enough exposure, they're just bad for you."

One of the companies that made the list plans to challenge the findings. California's Attorney General plans to examine the data before making any decision on legal action.
