Parents to blame for jaywalking crash that injured two boys, police say

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- It's carpool time at Woodbury Junior High and kids dangerously dart across the street, but police said it was a close call for two boys and it could be their parent's fault.
"The parent chose to stop in the middle of the street between two crosswalks and let their kids get out and jaywalk to school," officer Bill Cassell said.
While jaywalking, a car that was stopped for the boys on East Harmon, was rear-ended and hit the kids, police said. The children were taken to the hospital for minor injuries, but this highlights a bigger problem - parents not following the laws in school zones.
"They'll stop in the middle of the turning lane and let their kids off," grandmother Wendy Mydlach said. "I don't understand that, it's crazy."
Even after Wednesday morning's accident, Action News observed parents still parked across the street from school and kids make a run for it as cars drove past. Some parents said the kids have no choice but to cross there because there isn't a crosswalk close enough.
"We have no other place to drop our children off," grandmother Donna Justin said. "If we don't come early and we can't get a spot in this side we have to park on the other side and there is no crosswalk.
The nearest crosswalk from where the kids get picked up and dropped off is about 50 yards away at Harmon and Sandhill and some students don't want to walk that far.
"I go across the street and pick him up because of the drivers," father Steve Creel said.
"We want parents to set a positive example for their children to follow the laws not disregard the laws," Cassell said.
