Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- An update to a story Action News first told you about last November.

Two horses suffering in a tiny back yard and neglected, were rescued by a group of local animal lovers.

Mariposa, a mare who once lived in a small Las Vegas backyard, was found underfed and suffering from laminitis, a disease that affects the hoofs. She could barely stand.

Rescued by LEAN, the Local Equine Assistance Network, she is now in foster care and recovering nicely. She's also getting an upgrade to her home.

Star Nursery donated the sand and Griffith feed brought the tractor to give her a softer place to stand. These volunteers say it's only human to love rescued animals.

"Everybody that is interested in helping horses should get involved with LEAN. It's a great organization, great people, and it's very rewarding to help animals that bring a lot of therapy to a lot of people," said Gary Dodson with LEAN.

Ruby, Mariposa's new name, is still suffering from the disease that makes walking difficult, but the group LEAN hopes to make the rest of her days as comfortable as possible.

More information on what LEAN does and how you can get involved can be found here.
