Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Several vehicle break-ins have been reported in recent weeks at trails near Lake Mead.
Park Rangers are investigating break-ins at some of the most popular hiking trails in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
In the past 30 days, authorities say six break-ins were reported at the Gold Strike Canyon Trailhead parking lot near the Hoover Dam.
Six more break-ins were reported at other trailhead parking lots in the area, including White Rock Canyon and the Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail.
"Criminals are breaking windows and removing valuables left in plain sight, as well as glove boxes and consoles," said Adam Kelsey, deputy chief ranger.
Now, park rangers are stepping up patrols and warning hikers to use caution.
"We want our visitors to be aware of these crimes of opportunity so they can protect themselves by removing all valuables from their vehicles."
Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area or who has information related to the break-ins is asked to call (702) 293-8998.
