Local military veterans adopt homeless pets
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Two local charities are bringing together homeless pets and local veterans.
Veterans Village has teamed up with Heaven Can Wait Animal Society (HCWAS) to pair up vets with homeless dogs.
"He's awesome, he really is," says Michael Slaughter, a veteran from the Marine Corp that adopted a 2-year-old boxer-pitbull mix named Buster.
The duo will live at Veterans Village. Slaughter will help rehabilitate Buster.
HCWAS says training veterans to train the dogs gives them a marketable skill while enriching their personal lives; a win-win.
The idea is similar to a program HCWAS does with inmates at a local women's correctional facility.
HCWAS hopes to expand the program with veterans.
Plus, having pets there is welcomed.
"They're good luck. They bring a whole new atmosphere," says Veterans Village founder Arnold Stalk.
"We'll start with two dogs and hopefully we'll end up in the thousands that will get a forever home or be well trained," says HCWAS founder Harold Vosko.
