Brianna's Law supporters urge legislative support
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- Nevada lawmakers on the Senate Judiciary Committee are considering what many of them called the most significant criminal justice legislation in decades.
While several said the measure to collect DNA samples from anyone arrested on a felony charge was likely to pass, no vote was taken Thursday.
Democratic Sen. Debbie Smith of Sparks is sponsoring "Brianna's Law" and presented it to the committee.
The bill is named after Brianna Denison, a Reno woman who was raped and murdered in January 2008. Her assailant had a felony arrest in 2002, and had raped two other women in late 2007.
SB243 would compare samples of DNA from those arrested to crime scenes from unresolved cases. Supporters say it could have saved Denison and will save others from similar fates in the future.
