Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A new specialty court, called STOP court, has been designed to deal with repeat traffic offenders. Defendants are those that receive 10 or more moving violations within one year.
STOP court officially began Thursday, March 14, 2013 although Judge Heidi Almase has been perfecting it for a few months.
"I'm just excited; I think it's a great program," says Judge Almase. " Whatever anyone of us can do to make [the roads] safer, I think it's a benefit."
STOP court will be held every Thursday inside the Regional Justice Court in Las Vegas Municipal Court.
Each person in the program is required to have one open case with 180 days of jail suspended, receive no more traffic violations, get a valid license, registration and insurance, and pay pre-existing traffic fines.
STOP court is also a partnership with local law enforcement agencies.
