Nevada Senate takes up anti-bear hunt bill
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- Just two years removed from the first legal black bear hunt in Nevada, the state Senate is set to discuss a bill that would outlaw the hunts.
The Senate Committee on Natural Resources will deliberate on the issue at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
SB82 identifies the black bear as a protected mammal and bars the state Wildlife Commission from authorizing hunts of the animal.
Some of the most vocal supporters of SB82 are Native Americans who ascribe spiritual significance to the bear and view it as their relative.
During the Nevada Tribes Day last month, supporters sang and danced in front of the Legislature Building to show their opposition to bear hunts in Nevada.
