Arrest made in murder of man killed while barbecuing
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Ronald Ray Stampley, age 23, has been arrested in connection to the death of a man that was killed while barbecuing at a home in downtown Las Vegas on Feb. 1.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Kary Wells was in the courtyard of the Las Residencia apartments when two black males confronted Stampley about being a "Blood" gang member.
Wells supposedly responded that he used to be a gang member but was not one anymore. One of the black men then struck Wells in the face, knocking him to the ground.
Witnesses to the attack were able to provide physical descriptions to homicide detectives. Witnesses also said that Wells was kicked after he fell to the ground.
One of the witnesses was able to tell the police that the suspects were possible former residents at the apartment complex.
On Feb. 2, a call was received by dispatch from a woman that said she was the girlfriend of Ronald Stampley.
She told dispatch that Stampley had returned home the previous night and was upset because he thought he may have killed someone.
On Feb. 8, police also received information from another resident of the complex who identified Stampley as the man who hit and kicked Stampley.
He also told police that Stampley called him later and told him to tell police that he was acting in self defense.
A warrant for the arrest of Stampley was issued on Feb. 14.
Stampley's first court appearance is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Feb. 7.
