Class size up for discussion in Nevada Legislature
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- The topic of education continues in the Nevada Legislature with a hearing on elementary school class sizes.
AB162 will be discussed Wednesday during a joint hearing before the Senate and Assembly education committees. It's one of several education priorities unveiled this week by Democrats, who estimate the cost of their package would exceed $300 million.
During a special session in 2010, lawmakers gave school districts flexibility on class sizes because of budget cuts and the state's fiscal crisis during the Great Recession. Restoring those class-size ratios would cost about $95 million.
Also to be discussed is AB161, which would prohibit a third-grader from advancing to fourth grade if the student's reading skills are inadequate.
