2 NV landmarks make list of historic places
RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Two Nevada landmarks have earned spots on the National Register of Historic Places.
State historic preservation officers say the El Cortez Hotel Casino in downtown Las Vegas and the Washoe County library in downtown Reno made the exclusive list earlier this month.
Constructed in 1941, the El Cortez remains one of the oldest establishments on Fremont Street and the only establishment to continue operation under its original name.
While primarily Spanish Colonial Revival in style, it reflects a 1952 remodel when the facade was modernized.
The downtown Reno library was completed in 1966 as the city transformed from a gambling and divorce town to a cultural community.
Its interior landscaping includes an atrium with a pond and fountain. Mature trees and extensive foliage extend toward the skylights.
