Storm strands hundreds on California highway
(KTNV) -- Hundreds of people were trapped overnight on a highway in California because of a winter storm that is headed towards Nevada.
Hundreds of people were forced to spend the night in 20 degree temperatures as crews worked to dig them out.
It happened on Highway 58 between Barstow and Bakersfield. The 60-mile stretch of road was shut down because of snow and slick conditions.
It was a similar situation along Interstate 5 near Gorman where the snow was heavier. There are no closures there yet but that could happen if the storm strengthens.
For now, most people are taking it in stride.
Here in Nevada, people up north are loving this blast of winter. Ski resorts are packed in the Sierra Nevada and this could be the biggest storm in months for that area.
Cooler temperatures and rain are on the way for the Las Vegas valley and flurries are possible out near Red Rock and Mountain's Edge.
Mount Charleston received a couple of inches overnight and more is expected throughout the day.
So far, there are no problems along Interstate 15 that connects Nevada with California.
