Crosswalk and other changes proposed at famous Las Vegas sign
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A makeover is being proposed for the iconic "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign.
The current parking area for the sign is tiny and visitors often have to line up in their vehicles and wait for a chance to pull in.
Or, they are forced to park across the street and risk their lives by running across a busy roadway with no crosswalk.
By early next year, both problems could be solved.
The county is planning to expand the lot, put in a stoplight, and a crosswalk.
It is part of the county commissioner's ongoing efforts to improve pedestrian safety in the resort corridor.
The light and crosswalk will cost about $300,000 and expanding the lot will cost about $500,000.
The money will come from room tax revenues earmarked for vehicle and pedestrian improvements.
Commissioners also want to build a permanent bridge and have asked their staff to figure out a way to pay for it.
