Pahrump, NV (KTNV) -- Avery Church, age 58, of Amargosa Valley, has been arrested on murder and assault with a deadly weapon charges after a confrontation with four teenage boys led to a shooting.
According to the Nye County Sheriff's Department, deputies were dispatched to a residence on North Tamarack Road in Amargosa shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, they discovered a man suffering a gunshot to the abdomen.
The incident apparently began on Feb. 15 when Church got into an argument with four teenage males and an adult.
During the altercation, Church pulled a gun and threatened them with it but left without incident.
On Sunday, the teenage boys were collecting firewood across from the residence Church was at on Tamarack Road.
Church once again confronted the boys and pulled out a gun and pointed it at them.
Church then spun around and fired two rounds into a nearby stump. The boys left and reported the incident to an adult family member.
That man, John Sprague, went over to the residence on Tamarack Road to confront Church. During that conversation, Church allegedly pulled his gun and shot Sprague.
Sprague died during transport to a helicopter waiting to take him to receive medical attention.
Church was arrested and booked into the NCSO Detention Center and is currently being held without bail.
Church is being charged with murder and nine counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
