Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Clark County Commissioners could vote on Tuesday to cut back on trash pick-ups to encourage recycling.

If the "single-stream recycling" proposal is approved, Republic Services would only pick up trash once a week, and pick up recyclables once a week, instead of every two weeks.

Henderson and North Las Vegas have already signed on to the program, but many county residents oppose the change. They claim twice-weekly pick-ups are more convenient, and cut down on bad smells.

County Commission Chairman Steve Sisolak says, more is at stake.

Sisolak says, "The biggest thing that we're facing is that our recycling rate here is just abysmal. I mean, landfills are filling up at an alarming rate. We need to do a little bit better job. We've got a recycling rate of between three and four percent."

If the recycling ordinance is approved, red, white and blue recycling bins would be replaced with larger containers similar to those used for trash.

Residential trash rates would not increase. The commission will accept public comment before taking any action.
